About The Kansas City Estate Planning Symposium Prize
The prize was established at the UMKC School of Law with
contributions from the Estate Planning Society of Kansas City, Inc.,
the Federal (now the Kansas City) Estate Planning Symposium and
from the trusts departments of the following banks: Commerce
Bank, Mercantile Bank, Midwest Trust, Bank of America and UMB
Bank.
The prize is intended to encourage student participation and excellence in the study of estate planning at the UMKC School of Law.
The prize’s name was changed in 2003 from The Estate Planning Society of Kansas City Prize to The Federal Estate Planning Symposium Prize and since 2006 is now the Kansas City Estate Planning Symposium Prize
The Kansas City Estate Planning Symposium Prize
Four Awards will be given in Two Tracks:
- Track one: papers focusing on tax related topics
The “Myron E. Sildon Excellence in Tax
Related Estate Planning” award: $2,000
Second place award: $1,500 - Track two: papers focusing on non-tax related topics
First place award: $2,000
Second place award: $1,500
Who Can Apply
UMKC students pursuing either a Juris Doctor, Master of Laws or business school/accounting students with a strong interest in Estate Planning may apply. This award is based on merit with the following criteria:
- Scholastic ability and attainments in estate planning related courses;
- Motivation towards and promise of distinction in the field of estate planning law;
- Evidence of leadership qualities;
- Sensitivity to high ethical standards;
- Superior communication skills;
The Application & Selection Process
Applications must be submitted by Monday, April 2, 2012 with the following accompanying information:
- An official application cover sheet;
- A resume;
- A summary statement of those academic and extracurricular achievements and honors that the applicant considers particularly relevant to assessing his or her academic and leadership potential, as well as his or her sensitivity to ethical standards;
- A brief statement of the applicant’s motivation towards pursuing a career in estate planning law;
- A sample of the applicant’s writing on an estate planning law-related subject. Students may use papers previously written for class, law review articles, or other purposes;
Applications will be reviewed by the Selection Committee. The competition will include both written papers and oral presentations to the selection committee by all applicants. Award recipients will be asked to make brief presentations from their papers to the Kansas City Estate Planning Society at a luncheon in their honor to be held in April 2011. All four award recipients will be special guests at the 2012 Kansas City Estate Planning Symposium, April 26-27, at the Overland Park Convention Center, Overland Park, Kansas.
